Like many vets, Jason struggled with depression and felt socially isolated. His attempts at self medication lead him down the path of substance abuse and threatened to destroy his life, he contemplated suicide. On average, 22 veterans commit suicide everyday, every day people like Jason kill themselves to escape their pain and loneliness. Many like Jason struggle with addiction, depression, a low sense of self worth and an oppressive sense of social isolation.

But Jason chose to try something different. He joined a group of strangers on a hike in the outdoors and in that group of strangers he found honesty, compassion, and camaraderie, the kind he hadn't known since his time in the military. On the trails he could speak openly and with sincerity, without judgment. Outside, he was free and the people he met gave him hope that things would get better, that he would get better.

Like Jason, many vets experience difficulties like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. At the Mid-Atlantic Hiking Group, we believe nature can have a tremendous impact on alleviating some of these symptoms, especially when coupled with a positive social experience.

After 10 years and over 5000 free and/or nominal cost opportunities for thousands of individuals to get out and active, we ask you to lend a hand and help veterans like Jason take their first step toward a happier, and healthier life.

Over 100 veterans will participate in the Inaugural Veterans Hike Across Maryland event. On 5 dates from September 16, 2017, through November 11, 2017 (Veterans Day), they will hike the entire 41 miles of the Appalachian Trail (AT) as 5 separate day hikes as 6- to 10-mile segments across the state.

These events are more than just hikes! In conjunction with The Institute for Integrative Health, we are proud to conduct research into how engaging with the natural world impacts the well-being of those who have bravely served our nation.

Participation for the veterans in this event is free, but our support for the event entails providing specialized training for the several hike leaders needed for each hike, shuttle services from parking lots to the trailheads, insurance, T-shirts for the participants, and coordinating and providing a celebration on Veterans Day at the finish of the hike in Harpers Ferry.

Your $50 donation today will help defray the cost for one veteran to participate in this hiking series. Your donation also helps us gather the data that will lead to more resources to support those who fought to defend our freedoms.
